Why is the Town of Truckee moving to recycling and food waste carts?

Every plastic bag that is used will be in the environment for over 100 years. These programs will eliminate the need for plastic recycling bags, and bring the Town into compliance with state regulations requiring commercial recycling.

Consistent with our Town’s sustainability goals, these new services will:

  • Prevent up to three million plastic bags from being landfilled over the next 10 years
  • Prevent recycling contamination
  • Increase the amount of materials that can be recycled
  • Bring businesses into compliance with state regulations requiring commercial recycling and organics recycling

When will Truckee businesses have to start using carts?

Businesses will receive recycling carts during the last week in July 2018, with pick-up beginning in August 2018. Commercial food scraps carts will begin service February, 2019.

The use of the new containerized commercial food scraps, mixed recyclables, and mixed waste carts will provide more efficient collection and improved recycling of all waste products generated by local businesses and will ensure local businesses are in compliance with new California state regulations mandating commercial recycling and organic recycling.

Is it required that all businesses have food waste carts, or restaurants only?

According to new state regulations, any business that generates four cubic yards of total waste per week and one-half of a cubic yard of food waste per week will be required to have food waste service. To determine what services will be required of your business, please call (530) 582-2496 to schedule a complimentary waste assessment and to discuss options.

What materials go in recycling carts? What materials go in food waste carts or dumpsters?

Paper, glass, cans, cardboard, and plastics numbers 1 and 2 can go in the recycling carts. Materials should be emptied and clean. Recyclable materials should go directly in the carts; do not bag. View recycling signs.

All food scraps can go in the food waste carts or dumpsters including cooked foods and meat and dairy products. While paper or plastic products may have compostable labels, they should not go in food waste receptacles. Additionally, napkins and food-soiled paper are not accepted. Food scraps should be placed directly in food waste container; do not bag. View food waste signs.

Can a business continue to use blue bags for recycling?

No, however businesses will receive free recyclables carts for materials that have previously been put into blue bags for recycling.

How often will the carts be serviced?
